About Eric Phung

My journey as a musician and teacher

Eric began piano lessons from the age of 9 but his passion for music really came to light during his teen years at college. He then went on to study music at City University, London.

Some of Eric's piano studies were carried out with concert pianists Graham Fitch and Richard Uttley. In 2016, he was awarded the 1st prize trophy in a Jacque Samuels competition and he holds both the DipABRSM and LRSM piano performing diplomas with distinction, completed in 2017 and 2019.

Eric went to Summer School for Pianists at Stowe in 2019, with masterclasses taking place in the State Music Room of Stowe House as well as in the new music department of the All Steinway school. He also attended a Rachmaninoff Masterclass in 2020 with concert pianist Warren Mailley-Smith at Finchcocks in Kent. He takes part in performances both as a soloist and as a duo with Jessica.

During November 2021 and March 2023, Jessica and Eric performed at some music festivals. They played duets by Brahms, Mozart and Tchaikovsky (arr. Rachmaninoff) and received Distinction(+). They will be performing in a duet masterclass weekend this year at Finchcocks. Eric will also be accompanying Jessica as a singer.

Eric's private teaching studio has over 35 pupils currently ranging from beginners to post-grade 8 diploma. He was one of the principal piano teachers at Beethoven Music School in London for three years but had to end his tenure due to relocating and now he teaches at Hindhead Music Centre.

Eric's approach to teaching revolves around the use of positive reinforcements. Language and communication is important and he believes his role as the teacher is not necessarily to criticize, but to encourage and inspire, allowing room for pupils to develop a love and understanding of music. His pupils are actively encouraged to take part in performance opportunities and having taught for over 12 years, he has had several pupils whom he has taught from complete beginner to grade 8.

He is experienced with preparing pupils for exams, concerts, festivals and competitions, with many having received 1st place prizes and distinctions in their respective class.

Eric's pupils most distinguished achievements include:

  • 1st place prize winner of Dartford Young Musician of the Year 2018

  • 1st place prize winner of aged 6 and under class and subsequently winning Ealing Festivals award for the most promising performer aged 6 and under.

  • Admission into Haberdashers’ Boys’ School as a Music Scholar.
